Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship - Heavy Vehicle Technician

EU Logo This area covers the repair, servicing and diagnostic of cars and light vans. Skills you will learn include:

  • Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic and electrical procedures related to Heavy Vehicle
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to company and legislative processes
  • Access specific and related heavy vehicle technical information appropriately
  • The ability to service inspect and maintain heavy vehicles and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency(DVSA) and manufacturer standards
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electronic measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on heavy vehicles
  • Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulations
  • An ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, Heavy vehicle and diagnosing techniques
  • Undertake the “F” gas qualification

Length of Training

The course will be undertaken over 3 years.

Qualifications

This level 3 course will be assessed and calculated on a weighted score from the following elements

  • Log book and Behaviour assessment
  • On-Programme knowledge tests at Gateway 2
  • Synoptic Knowledge End test
  • Synoptic Skills end test

Entry Requirements

Aptitude Test    Interview    School Report    Record of Achievement
Hold a “C” Grade, new Grade 4, (level 2 Functional Skills), or be able to achieve these grades in Maths & English

To guarantee a placement on KITS Apprenticeship scheme, an offer of employment from a suitable Employer is required.
